The obverse (front) of the coin was inspired by Adolph A. Weinman’s 1916 design, “Walking Liberty.” The classic design was already a popular favorite and one of the most cherished of any modern-day United States coinage, making it an instant favorite among collectors and fans when it was introduced. John Mercanti created the reverse (back), which depicted a heraldic eagle under a shield. The eagle carries a flag in its beak while gripping an olive branch in its right talon and arrows in its left, like the United States Great Seal. The original Thirteen Colonies are represented by thirteen five-pointed stars above the eagle and below the inscription.
