Throughout the first decade of its availability, the American Silver Eagle coin enjoyed relatively stable demand from investors and collectors. Excluding the first two years of availability, the American Silver Eagle saw mintage numbers between 5.5 million and 7.7 million each year from 1988 to 1993. Beginning in 1994, however, demand would start to slip towards an all-time low just two years later in 1996.
On the obverse is the familiar Walking Liberty image from Adolph A. Weinman, which previously adorned the Walking Liberty Half Dollar from 1916 to 1947. In addition, John Mercanti’s heraldic eagle, a staple of American coins going back to 1793, appears on the reverse of these coins.
